Born and bred in Kittilä, Einari Junttila (1901–1975) was an internationally respected self-taught lyrical realist, who is known, above all, for his water-colour paintings. His work also includes oil paintings and pastel drawings. The earliest artist from Kittilä, Junttila was a faithful interpreter of the sensitive Lappish wilderness.
The museum is based in the late artist’s home, which he rebuilt after the war on the foundations of an earlier building from the 1930s. The museum is located in the centre of Kittilä.
